Our clients approached us to create an oasis in their backyard. They travelled to Bali often and wanted to create a lush garden that reminded them of this including a swimming pool and water feature. Our initial pitch included a pool and landscape concept using 3D design software. Our customer generally loved the concept, however there where some gaps in the detail, which required further work. At this stage we introduced a Landscape Architect who we had worked with successfully on several projects in the past. The design was developed to a point where it could be accurately quoted before heading to construction.
We have elevated the swimming pool above existing ground level. This helps to solve two of the design issues. The first was the need for a water feature. We have integrated an infinity edge to one side of the pool with water flowing over a granite-clad water wall into a trough concealed by river pebbles. The charcoal mosaic inside the pool creates the dramatic look of a reflection pond. The second issue that the backyard is not very big and the clients did not want to look through a pool fence at the pool. By elevating the pool we are able to use the infinity wall of the pool as a compliant pool barrier as well as increasing the general feeling of space.
The pool design incorporates a spa, lap pool and extended seating area along the length of the pool. This helps to create a multi purpose swimming pool with areas for exercise, family fun, rejuvenation and relaxation.
Materials chosen for the project were complimentary to the natural materials common to Balinese design with a modern twist. This can be seen with the use of large format bluestone and granite, random bluestone steppers, timber, river pebbles and dark mosaic tiles. Planting is typically lush species including bamboo, crepe myrtle, iris, lilium and several creepers and ground covers.
The pool includes all of the low maintenance, easy to use features such as in-floor cleaning, pool/spa automation, automatic chlorination, automatic leveling and has dual heating systems to extend use. This provides our client with a backyard oasis that is not only easy to use but a pleasure to own.
The project was a success, winning the Gold Award for Best Pool and Landscaping Combination at the 2016 SPASA Awards.
